Geeks & Depression meetup
Tuesday, 6-December, 7:30pm
No Starch Press, 38 Ringold Street, San Francisco, CA 94103
(near Civic Center BART Station)
Let’s have a meetup where geeks can talk about depression and suicide. You are not alone. Share your story, if you like. Share a friend’s story. Or just hang out and listen. Let’s make it OK to talk about these things so that we don’t feel so alone with our feelings of being alone and depressed or suicidal.
This is not a support group — none of us are trained professionals, but we can get together in a safe, confidential space to talk about depression and suicide — an important part of life for so many of us geeks.
If others elsewhere in the world feel like creating their own meetups, please do.
Mitch.

Mitch,
Thanks for your absolute commitment and open way forward with this painful topic. One thing struck my mind while I thouhgt “Hell, yeah! I’d love to join you, but I am located in Germany”: Why not make an open platform with live attendees from all over the world? To show that noone is left alone, that everyone has someone to reach out? If we make this worldwide and have volunteers from all corners of this lovely planet, we can effectively create a 24 h “hotwire” to reach out in case of need. If I had a deep depression again and could reach out to somebody in Iceland or Malaysia in the middle of my night, I really think that could save me to the next day or even beyond. “Operation Reach Out – Geeks and Depression”. Being a member of Diaspora, I think even Ilya would have liked the community idea. But that is just a guess. I have never known him. Unfortunately.
Thanks for your thoughts and insight.
All the best from Hamburg, Germany,
Arnd

Hey Mitch,
Congratulations for such initiative. It is a very interesting topic, indeed. Luckly I have no need to attend this meeting, but I agree it might represent a great opportunity for geeks around the world to talk, share their thoughts and get better. Ar Arnd suggested, I also suggest having the option to remote participants to join, so you might include people from other US states and from outside US. Remote participation would also enable local people who might be shy enough to join the meeting in person.
Just my 2 cents.
Greetings from Brazil…
